Dogwood Tree

We had a beautiful Dogwood tree in our front yard. We noticed this spring that only a portion of the tree bloomed and we chalked it up to our cool spring. But then we started noticing that the tree was really drooping and really quite dead.

Removing the tree has been on our list for a couple months and in the middle of a nap time this week James decided that would be the perfect time to cut down the tree! (Guesses on how successful nap time was that day???)

Took 2 afternoons but the dead dogwood tree is cut down :(

Hmmm....

Wouldn't it be great if there was an edger that children could use that could edge the weeds????

Lydia's Projects

Lydia and her projects are something else. Last week she couldn't decide on just one set of printables so we had lots of different things going on (Creation, Caterpillars, Ducks, Icecream, and whatever else might have jumped out at the 3 year old!).

Duck Puppets (and we ran out of glue - hence the sad face!)

Lydia's Creation Poster

Icecream Cone Creation (we were making our own brown paper because we ended up with a pad of paper with no brown!).

Various Creation Coloring Sheets

The VERY favorite project of the week - a BIG caterpillar. Amazingly, a week later the caterpillar is still being played with daily and still in one piece. Why do we buy toys again???

Arguing

We have been working with Lydia on not arguing/whining when told to do some thing. Today she was given a sticker for her chart for not arguing, the future lawyer then had the brilliant idea to argue for 2 stickers. Don't think she understood the lesson...

Building a Stool

For reasons we will never know our hall bathroom (i.e. "Lydia's Bathroom") the counter is really tall. With a small stool she can reach every other sink in the house BUT her bathroom sink. This is really problematic and was equaling allot of frusteration for a 3 year old wanting to be independant and battles with mom.

I was OVER it but could not find a stool to buy that was sturdy enough for Lydia to be independant with but also tall enough that she could reach the sink.

SO James and Lydia just built their own stool.

Working Hard. Lydia got to use the drill even.

And the pure delight when she got to brush her teeth all by herself!

For a wanna be independent three year old, this picture is priceless!

For inquiring minds, Lydia forgets to brush her top teeth so she still needs help but the battles over all are over!!!!!!

ABC's

Lydia loves singing her ABC song and for months and months she has been singing it this way:

"ABCDXYZ Now I know my ABCs next time won't you sing with me". And then she claps and cheers for herself.

I asked her this week, Lydia why do you skip so many letters (because she refuses to put the other letters in "her song" and is utterly annoyed anytime anybody sings the entire song).

Lydia's response: "I am too busy to sing the whole song. I like to clap at the end".

Not sure what Lydia is soooooo busy with but singing all those letters is apparently a very time consuming activity for a busy three year old!

C is for Candy Week

Lydia chose the "candy week" for her projects. We did do projects and I totally forgot to take pictures! Oh, well!

Last week was also unseasonably cool (70's/low 80's - no humidity!). We played outside for our hours and hours every day. Ate lunch outside several days. Had the windows open (I didn't even know that was possible in NC in August!!!!). Basically I will be broken hearted when the weather returns to normal summer temperatures.

I did get one picture - Lydia painted her letter C with water colors...

Doors to Independance

Lydia has a new quest in life. Opening doors BY MY SELF!

The locked front door that was installed by a not so handy handy man and involves two hands to unlock. Lydia would like to spend 10+ minutes trying to unlock that door by herself. If I perhaps go ahead and unlock it while she is putting on her shoes so she can have success, well that just equals the need to fall dramatically to the floor and pout.

The screen door wasn't latched right the other morning so she touched the screen door and it opened. Apparently this equaled "mom's fault" and she fell dramatically to the patio crying "I really can open the front door alone". The reasoning of trying to tell the 3 year old that I wasn't even near the front door fell on deaf ears.

But then the best door opening situation as of late: Lydia likes to open the car door from the inside byherself. So I unbuckled her from the front seat and went around the car to offer help, if needed. As I round the corner of the car I see two little feet flip up and do a not so graceful roll on the floor followed by SCREAMING. So I open the car door to help the little girl jammed between the back seat and front seat head first only for the screaming to get even louder "I wanted to open the door". OH MY!!!!!!!!

Independence is good right?

Sewing Projects

Lydia finished her blanket for her baby brother this week. Amazing since she literally would sew for 5ish minutes at a time! A little at a time ;) She was soooooo excited when it was all done.

Showing off her handiwork for her Dad.

"This is what babies do". Pretty accurate right?

Posing with Mom and the Blanket!

Front of the Curtains for a Baby Boys room...

And no photo event can be complete without a few pictures of the big sister!

Butterfly Class!

We have really enjoyed the Nature Classes offered through the Parks and Rec. this summer. Lydia adores the Nature preserve where these classes are held. The natural playground entertains her for long periods of time! The fairy trail also filled with logs, rocks, tee-pees, and such are a very special place to this little girl. Basically exploring nature has become a favorite activity for Lydia.

We have gone to three classes this summer. The first we learned about mammal babies (where we even saw a real deer sleeping in the woods!).

We have learned about frogs and toads - we built a "toad adobe" for our yard. Lydia chose to put our toad adobe on the driveway soooooo I think we are going to do a bit more reading on toads and see if toads like hot sunny driveways ;)

Lydia's very very very favorite class though was the butterfly class! I should have known that. She adored flying around the Nature preserve pretending to be a butterfly. The straw in the picture below is the butterfly's tongue. Lydia happily sucked dirt up the straw into her mouth just like a "real butterfly" would do. The moral to that lesson: "Dirt tastes yucky".

After we got home that day, Lydia turned her string cheese into a butterfly tongue. Creative right?

Daddy's Helper

James car needed some work this weekend. While I went to the store to get the "oh, we also need parts" Lydia stayed home to help her Dad. Typically Lydia helping her Dad equals James working hard and Lydia playing toys. BUT this day - when I had forgotten play clothes - Lydia became a grease monkey and worked very hard helping her dad. AND had sooooooo much fun.

At bath time that night, Lydia even had grease up her back. No clue how that happened but she had a wonderful time helping her Dad!

Water Balloons

How to Have Five (yes FIVE!) minutes of fun with a 3 year old.

It took me 20ish minutes to get a method to work to put water in the water ballon and fill 12 balloons.

It took the 3 year old 5 minutes to "splat" all the water balloons.

BUT the 25 minutes of work and fun did equal hours and hours and hours of talking about how fun the "splat water balloons" are.

Tinker Toys

This weekend was really really really hot! (Atleast in my opinion - others may have been comfortable!).

We pulled out several boxes of our "rainy day" toys. James and I had a wonderful time building a barn with Tinker Toys. Lydia thoroughly enjoyed playing with different "food toys" and serving James and I while we worked.

At the end of the barn construction Lydia did pose for pictures (looks like she even helped!).

And James and Lydia did build a shopping cart. That was more realistic with Lydia's attention span!

Letter A

We did finger painting. This was a huge success as Lydia walked around with her "art work" for days!

Lydia worked hard many days on making "A" but most importantly her name. Which most days her name is spelled "D-E-A-N-N-A". Little ears are always listening when you are on the phone!

Counting out syllables. Hard work takes lots of concentration!

 And a little silliness :)

Lydia has been having her "morning Bible study" on the couch.

Making presents for Uncle Robert and a new cousin.
